چکیده
Care of the high-risk neonate usually refers to the low-birth-weight infant or the sick term newborn. Whereas hyperbilirubinemia is certainly a matter of concern in these infants, the decisions that must be made regarding jaundice in the high-risk neonate are, in general, less complex than those that must be made for the healthy full-term infant. For the term and near-term infant, shorter hospital stays, the need for outpatient surveillance and management, and the occasional disturbing case of extreme hyperbilirubinemia and even kernicterus raise new issues in the management of neonatal jaundice. Bilirubin has both salutary and toxic effects. At physiologic levels it exerts important antioxidant effects ,107. 113 and, although its toxic effects are well documented, there are also some concerns that aggressive use of phototherapy in very lowbirth-weight infants may not be entirely innocuous.v'

متن کاملEtiologies of Prolonged Unconjugated Hyperbilirubinemia in Neonates Admitted to Neonatal Wards
Background: Jaundice is a common condition among neonates. Prolonged unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia occurs when jaundice persists beyond two weeks in term neonates and three weeks in preterm neonates. This study aimed to determine the etiologies of prolonged unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in infants admitted to the neonatal ward of Besat Hospital in Hamadan, Iran. Methods: This study was cond...
متن کاملDo triple test results predict risk for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia?
OBJECTIVE Neonatal jaundice is the most common condition that requires hospital admission and outpatient follow-up after discharge in neonates. The values of more than 17 mg/dL in term infants are accepted as neonatal significant hyperbilirubinemia. We aimed to define if there is any relationship between second trimester serum markers and neonatal severe hyperbilirubinemia to protect the neonat...

متن کاملSignificant Neonatal Weight Loss Related to Idiopathic Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia
Introduction: Inadequate intake of breast milk in the first days of life leads to weight loss in neonates. Jaundice is also more prominent in these infants. In this cross-sectional study, we tried to evaluate the extent of weight loss in term breastfed infants who were hospitalized for idiopathic hyperbilirubinemia. Methods: This prospective study involved 1072 infants >48 hours old, who were ...
